Authorities in New Jersey are searching for a missing teenager who went missing after visiting an East Orange grocery store last month.
JaShyah Moore, 14, of East Orange, was last seen on Oct. 14 around 10 a.m. after making a trip to Poppies Deli, according to a statement from the City of East Orange. The teenager was already gone at the store to pick up items for his family.
East Orange Police Chief Phyllis Bindi said officers are working closely with partner agencies as they continue to analyze the data and take any advice that may lead police to find JaShyah.
âWe are asking for the public’s help and urge anyone with information to contact our helpline at 973.266.5041,â Bindi said in an email to NPR.
Further details regarding JaShyah’s disappearance have not been disclosed by authorities in New Jersey as the East Orange Police Department, FBI and State Police are working together to locate her.
NPR contacted New Jersey State Police; they did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
In an interview with local WPIX TV station, JaShyah’s mother Jamie Moore said her daughter initially came home from the deli and told her she lost the EBT card she used to pay for food. .
âShe came back and she said, ‘Mom, I lost the card,’â said Jamie Moore. She said she told the teenager to ‘go back [her] steps “to find the map.
Jamie Moore told WPIX that when JaShyah didn’t get home within an hour, she went out looking for him. She said she had visited several delicatessens in the area, but could not find her daughter.
She eventually reported a nearby police officer to report JaShyah missing.
âShe’s such a smart girl. She wouldn’t be spending the night out,â Jamie Moore said. âI know my daughter. She wouldn’t want me to worry.
Authorities in New Jersey said they obtained surveillance footage of Poppies Deli and US Food Market, another store JaShyah visited before his disappearance.
JaShyah is described as being 5 feet 5 inches tall. She was last seen wearing khaki pants, a black jacket and black boots, police said.
If you see JaShyah Moore or know her whereabouts, authorities are urging you to call East Orange Police immediately.
