Venture X Card 2021 review – Forbes Advisor

Earn rewards

The process of earning on the Venture X card is fairly straightforward for most purchases: Earn 2 miles per dollar on all qualifying purchases and 5 miles per dollar on flights and 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars on of the reservation through Capital One Travel.

You’ll notice the increase in travel income, but there’s a catch: it only applies if you’re using the Capital One portal. For plane tickets, that’s no problem, especially since they’ve teamed up with Hopper to help you find the best airfares. But for hotels and car rentals, you might lose the status benefits if you book through an OTA, which hotels and rental companies will likely see as the portal.

There is also a 10,000 Venture Mile bonus awarded on each card anniversary.

Redeeming rewards

The Venture has always won awards for its ease of use, and the Venture X offers the same easy ways to start your journey. You can purchase any trip as you normally would, then when the invoice arrives you can apply your miles to all purchases in that category. Keep in mind that sometimes things that you think might be billed as travel, like theme park tickets, can end up in a different category.

You can also redeem your rewards at a cent per point on the Capital One Travel Portal. This would be useful for airline tickets since your benefits apply regardless of how you purchase your ticket. There are other uses like Amazon and redeeming gift cards, but these usually won’t earn you the penny per point you get while traveling.

Finally, you can transfer your Venture Miles to several travel partners, including Air Canada Aeroplan (a United partner), Air France / KLM Flying Blue (a Delta partner) or British Airways Avios (an American Airlines partner). However, if you want straightforward redemptions on US-based airlines, Capital One Miles is not the best choice.

Capital One also has unique hotel partners of which Wyndham is particularly attractive to families as Wyndham allows you to redeem for vacation rentals at a rate of 15,000 points per room. That said, Capital One lacks reputable hotel partners like Hyatt, Hilton or Marriott.

Reward potential

The earnings of 2 miles per dollar on this card makes it quite easy to determine how much you could earn. Forbes Advisor uses data from various government agencies to determine both base income and average spend in various categories, which we used to compile potential rewards for various credit cards. The 70th percentile of salaried households report $ 100,172 per year and $ 52,820 in standard expenses. Assuming that 50% of these expenses were charged to this card, the total annual expenses for the card would be $ 26,410. This brings the annual earnings to 52,820 company miles.

You also earn extra miles on airline tickets, hotels, and car rentals booked through the Capital One portal. For rewards purposes, we are only considering airline tickets, as many customers will want to book hotels and car rentals directly to receive the benefits of Elite status. Our family spends $ 1,755 on airline tickets per year for an additional 8,775 Venture Miles, for a total of 61,595 Venture Miles in addition to first year and anniversary bonuses.
