Stafford wins first trip to state tournament

Stafford punched his ticket to Georgetown.

The Spartans kept their historic campaign alive with a 4-3 win over Salado in the Region III-4A Championship game on Saturday afternoon at Legacy Stadium in Katy.

Stafford (20-5-4) qualifies for the UIL State Tournament for the first time in program history. The Spartans will play in the Class 4A semifinals at 4 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown. UIL will announce the fixtures on Sunday. The state title game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Jonathan Rivas scored twice to lead Stafford against Salado (23-4). Daniel Torres and Raul Peralta scored early in the first and second half, respectively, to help set the tone for their side.

Stafford canceled out a penalty shootout victory over Mexia in the regional semifinals on Friday. The Spartans beat Washington, Huffman-Hargrave and Scarborough in the first three playoff rounds.

The team will come to the state with a lot of momentum, riding a nine-game winning streak.

REGION II-6A FINAL

Rockwall passes in front of Klein

Klein saw his season end with a 6-0 loss to Rockwall in the Region II-6A Championship game on Saturday afternoon at the Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex in Austin.

The Bearkats (21-4-2) have accomplished a lot this season, despite the loss. Klein was the undefeated district champion 15-6A at 10-0-2 and reached the regional final for the first time since 1998.

The Bearkats qualified for the title game with a 1-0 victory over Mansfield in the regional semi-final on Friday. The team beat Cypress Falls, College Park and Cypress Woods in the first three rounds.

Rockwall (21-3-2) will be making his first appearance in a UIL State Tournament.

REGION III-4A FINAL

Bay City falls in Lumberton

Bay City also reached the end of the road on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to Lumberton in the Region III-4A Championship game at Legacy Stadium in Katy.

The Blackcats (27-2-1) had won 26 straight games at the start of the day and hadn’t lost since Jan. 6.

Bay City was the undefeated district champion 24-4A at 14-0 and reached the regional final for the second consecutive season. The team had allowed only eight goals all season before Saturday.

The Blackcats beat Burnet 1-0 in the regional semi-final on Friday. They knocked out North Forest, Little Cypress-Mauriceville and Hardin-Jefferson in the first three rounds.

Lumberton (21-3-1) qualifies for the UIL State Tournament for the first time since 2006.
