FIRST ON FOX: Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kansas, helped a migrant suffering from heat exhaustion during a dramatic recent trip to the southern border – an incident he said was a window into the “unsustainable humanitarian crisis at the United States and Mexico border.
Marshall, a doctor, was on a trip to the Texas border with Kansas sheriffs and was riding with Border Patrol agents in an area between where smugglers drop off illegal migrants and where they are picked up by others. It is a dangerous area with hazardous conditions for migrants who have often traveled thousands of miles.

“It’s a wilderness,” Marshall told Fox News Digital in an interview, noting the hazards of rattlesnakes, the Texas brush, and the heat. “It’s already hot there.”
Officers spotted a smuggler who stopped in an area, brought four or five people into the car, as well as one into the trunk. Officers continued until the car stopped and the residents fled.
Officers caught many of those fleeing, including a woman who Marshall said was showing severe symptoms of heat exhaustion that could potentially be fatal. It was then that he came into action.
“The only young lady was obviously suffering from heat exhaustion, and maybe she was borderline heatstroke, so when they brought her in, I was able to watch her, and. .. her breathing was very fast, her pulse was 140, she hadn’t had a drink of water in two days, her knee ached, her hand was cut off by the barbed wire fence, and I really think that she would probably be dead in, I don’t know, an hour or two.
A video released by Marshall’s office shows the doctor giving her water, examining her injuries and helping her carry her to a cooler area and calm her breathing.
“We cooled her down, we gave her water, just basic first aid, so that’s what you see me tending to her health needs,” he said.
Although heat exhaustion is not uncommon at the border, the risk of it developing into heat stroke is significant.

“I’m not intimidated by situations and when they brought her back over the fence and I saw her breathing as she was I knew she was in distress, the officer yelled at help and she was semi-conscious, passing out. . Heat exhaustion is what leads to heat stroke, and once heat stroke starts, it’s almost irreversible,” said he declared.
Although he stepped up to help, he stressed that it is the Border Patrol agents, who do this work and tackle these conditions every day, who are the heroes of the story.
“These poor officers are supposed to be nurses, social workers, psychologists and at the same time have to protect themselves and protect America,” he said. “I was able to do my bit, but they are the real heroes, not me.”
Marshall said the incident showed the “unsustainable humanitarian crisis” at the border that affects not just Americans but the migrants themselves, who have often traveled hundreds of miles on foot and can be exploited by transcriminal organizations.
“So by the time they show up, they’ve got dysentery, they’re dehydrated, they’ve got wounds, infections, a lot of them have been sexually abused, all the things you can imagine, and then a lot of people die on the way from heatstroke, dehydration, and then others die as they drown while crossing the river,” he said.
He blamed President Biden’s policies squarely and said officers told him what they needed was to revert to Trump-era policies, including completing the border wall.

“It’s an unsustainable humanitarian crisis, it’s a human tragedy created by Joe Biden and his politics,” he said. He wants this crisis, either he’s the most incompetent person in the world, or he wants this crisis — he wants to remake America.”
He also called on Biden to come to the border himself.
“He needs to go see what I saw, not fly into a little airport there and say ‘I went to the border’ like the vice president. Joe Biden needs to go see the crisis he created. ”
