Gunmen kidnap eight travellers, police launch rescue operation

A commercial bus with eight passengers traveling along the Buguma/Degema/Abonema axis of the east-west road in Rivers State was hijacked by gunmen.

A source said the thugs intercepted the bus around 7.30pm on Monday and took the driver and all passengers to an unknown destination.

The source said the bus was attacked around Ahiankwo market on the Emohua-Kalabari road as it headed towards the river area from Port Harcourt.

The whereabouts of the bus driver and the travelers was still unknown on Tuesday, although the thugs had not yet contacted the families of the victims.

Acting police command spokeswoman Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the incident, saying efforts were underway to rescue the passengers and apprehend the kidnappers.

She said: ‘Yes, we are aware of the incident and an investigation is ongoing. It was an Opel bus that was attacked and eight passengers were kidnapped.

“We mobilized our tactical unit to ensure the victims were released unharmed and to apprehend the kidnappers.”
