Guide Over Sands Trust crowned Unsung Heroes at the Cumbria Tourism Awards

A COUPLE who are helping hundreds of fundraisers safely cross the treacherous sands of Morecambe Bay have won a top gong.

The Guide Over Sands Trust has been recognized for its walks at the Cumbria Tourism Awards, winning the Unsung Hero Award for 2022.

Guide Michael Wilson and his partner Joanne have shown that their modern take on bay walks is proving to be a huge hit.

Joanne takes care of all the administration, bookings, social media, website and organization of each walk while Michael has the challenging role of Queen’s Guide to plan, mark and guide up to 500 walkers across Arnside Bay to Grange.

A Guide Over Sands Trust spokesperson said: “It was an honor to receive our Unsung Hero Award for 2022 at the Cumbria Tourism Awards.

“We have now been nominated to represent our walks and Cumbria at the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence in 2023.”

The sands of Morecambe Bay are renowned for their shifting sands and rapid tides.

Last year the walks raised £341,000 for 36 different charities and this year they are set to do even better.
