Covid-19 infection rates, international traveler totals rise

While the government suspended the Test & Go program in an effort to curb the spread of the Omicron variant last month, those already approved continue to pour in and many have come through the Sandbox program. Despite limiting the influx of international travelers, the number of Covid-19 infections imported from abroad has steadily increased and the infection rate among those arriving has risen sharply, with Russia in head of the pack.

In November, when the government reopened Thailand’s borders to international travelers with 3 different entry regimes depending on country of origin and vaccination status, out of approximately 133,000 international arrivals, the infection rate was just 0 .13%. In December, as more people began to travel to Thailand, that infection rate tripled to 0.45% with nearly 291,000 arrivals.

But so far, in the first half of January, with the outbreak of the highly transmissible variant of Omicron around the world, infection rates have skyrocketed to almost 8 times as infections were discovered among the approximately 116,000 people who arrived this year at a rate of 3.42%.

Interestingly, the rate is the lowest among those who have gone through the Happy Quarantine program, with an infection rate of 2.05%. The Sandbox scheme and the Test & Go plan were similar in terms of infection rates, at 3.74% and 3.57% respectively.

A total of 282 Covid-19 infections were detected among recent international arrivals from 51 different countries yesterday. Travelers from Russia were the largest demographic with 59 passengers infected in total, including 58 through the Test & Go program while one was a quarantined traveler.

That’s more than double the country with the second-highest number of infections, the United States, which had 29 total infections, of which 10 were from Sandbox, 3 from Test & Go and 6 from Quarantine. Almost half of those travellers, 14 in total, were returning Thai nationals.

Germany and Sweden followed with 18 and 17 infections respectively, followed by France and the UK from which 14 Covid-19 infections were identified each. The United Arab Emirates, Switzerland, Denmark and Australia complete the top 10.
